A Still Life of Figs and Plums
STORY
On an early morning in August, I found myself up before the sun on my way to The Cotswolds. I was attending a still life photography workshop which had me both feeling anxious and excited. I hadn’t taken part in photographic instruction since my college days. We were told to bring any props or food items to include in our still life creations. Before arriving at the pub, I noticed a farm stand where I pulled over and found the most beautiful ripe figs and plums. Of all the still lifes I created that day, the simple image of the fruit on a pewter plate ended up being my favorite. That light and the way it highlights the fruit set against the dark wall. I was pleased as it couldn’t help but think of the old dutch master’s with their moody and atmospheric oil paintings.
