Highland Calf in the Heather

from $29.00

STORY

Driving through Dartmoor on my long journey home from Devon, I decided to stop off at the last scenic point to take in the views of a place that I’ve fallen completely in love with. The fading heather is in casting a faint purple hue over the hazy moorland. As I wander into the boggy land, I suddenly spot a shaggy Highland cow. Not far off, I noticed a few smaller calves. Somewhere beneath its furry sporran-like forelock two eyes stare back at me. This was one of those perfect moments between the cute highland calf, the landscape and lighting.

Though this is Dartmoor and not Scotland, these are the latest cattle breeds to be introduced onto the moor thanks to the work of selective breeders. The locals refer to the the cattle simply as the Highlanders.
