Still Life Photography Workshop

Workshop hosted by Ros of @her_dark_materials and Claire of The Ebrington Arms

The first time I saw Ros of @her_dark_materials work, I was struck by how her images evoked the a feeling of the old world Dutch Masters and the still life works they created.

When I learned that she would be hosting her first workshop, I jumped on the opportunity to participate. Not only would she be hosting this intimate workshop, but it was located at the atmospheric and lovely country pub, The Ebrington Arms, located in the northern edge of The Cotswolds.

It had been since my university days that I’d taken part in photography instruction. Though I wasn’t looking for help with how to shoot, I was seeking to be inspired and challenged. I felt rusty and in need of directed work.

My work tends to lean towards portraiture and documentary style of photography. Creating and shooting a still life was out of my comfort zone, but I knew I was in good hands with Ros. She was approachable and willing to offer help. I was grateful for her guidance throughout the workshop.

The morning was spent where each participant shared their photography experience and reasons for joining the workshop. Followed by Ros sharing her photography journey with us along with what inspired her work. I always find it fascinating to learn how others discover a passion for photography and the inspiration behind their images. We were then given free reign to use Ros’s props and set up various still life scenes throughout the pub. I felt intimidated and uncertain what to do at first. I took a breath and got to it! Here are a few examples of my work from that day. Once I got into my own creative space, I enjoyed constructing different still life compositions.

After a morning of creating photos, we had lunch prepared for us at the pub. What a feast it was not only to eat but for the eyes!

Our bellies full and more relaxed after breaking bread together, we ventured over to Hidcote gardens. There we wandered the gorgeous grounds at leisure. It was the perfect end to our day together. Thankfully, I was staying the night at the pub. What a glorious treat that was! The bed.. the view.. the free sherry and cookies on arrival. Let’s not forget the luxurious bathtub to soak in.

Following a restful night of sleep, the morning began with a delicious breakfast of pancakes with fresh berries and locally roasted coffee. Overall, my little getaway was much needed and welcomed. I returned home refreshed and inspired.
