Portrait Of A Young Writer

“Because when you are imagining, you might as well imagine something worth while.” L.M. Montgomery

Watching my children in this stage of life - the age of discovery - has been a joy. “The Wonder Years” comes to mind. They are in the early stages of seeking out what brings them joy alongside understanding their talents and skills. Just as important as it is to recognize these gifts in my child and encourage their efforts.

Last school year, I spent much of our homeschooling focused on creative writing and reading dozens of books that had inspired me in my youth. I Capture The Castle, Anne of Green Gables, Secret Garden, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Little Women are a few of the classics we read. To see my daughter not only enjoy these books but discover her passion for writing has thrilled me.

Not only has my daughter found a passion for writing and nurturing this skill, but she is also growing confidence in her writing ability. This confidence has unlocked a window to which she envisions her future as a published author.

To witness this as a mother, remembering my unfurling, leaves me humbled to be entrusted with the gift to encourage, nurture and inspire her heart.

What I’ve realized is that we as parents are writing a story of what our children believe about themselves. What they value and where they place their attention. I understand the influence of sharing the stories of my life with the kids. In sharing what stirred my young heart, captured my imagination, I hope they can also see themselves in my shoes. At about this similar age, I discovered a love for art, music, writing, and a big dream of living abroad. All of this has come true.

I didn’t magically arrive at this point in my life. I credit the support and encouragement of my parents and other adults who recognized and affirmed my talents. Without that, I would have been aimless and adrift.

Sally Clarkson writes: “We are to love, serve, inspire, help, and give to our children. God will direct the works of our lives and the ways we each bring light--if we are willing to follow Him and do His bidding by writing His messages on their hearts, throughout their lives.”

I see the fruit of this even now.

I cannot wait to see where each of my kids find themselves in the years, decades to come. I am confident one day you’ll see Fefe Campbell’s books on the shelves of your bookstore. Here’s to dreaming big dreams for our children (and ourselves!).
